He sought advice from some notable fly tiers (and one not very notable at all \u2013 ie Bill). Readers might want to consider the final assembled list and contribute comments (I\u2019m sure Peter will add \u2018iron blue dun\u2019 to the dry list).<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Howdy Bill, Evan, Lyall and Nathan,<\/p>\n<p>So my original intent was to find \u20185 flies of each type\u2019 that I could tie over winter. As I&#8217;m fast learning, there is no simple answer \u2026 especially when trying to search what some of the recommended flies look like and you get multiple versions! I may have to get that Aussie Trout flies book I\u2019ve been trying to avoid buying. I have added some links to some of the flies (not to buy, just to see what they look like). Below is a summary of the feedback I have received.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks again for your advice &#x1f60a;.<\/p>\n<p>Dry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elk Hair Caddis \u2013 normal and CDC<\/li>\n<li>Royal Wulff (some \u2018big\u2019 to suspend nymphs)<\/li>\n<li>Black Mayfly spinner (doubles as an ant pattern)<\/li>\n<li>Midge ball?<\/li>\n<li>F Fly (a super simple dry with a CDC wing): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/f-fly-black.html\">https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/f-fly-black.html<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/flyandlure.org\/articles\/fly_tying\/5_easy_to_tie_cdc_f_fly_patterns\">http:\/\/flyandlure.org\/articles\/fly_tying\/5_easy_to_tie_cdc_f_fly_patterns<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stimulator: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goulburnvlyflyfishing.com.au\/Information\/Fly%20Patterns\/fly%2013%20royal%20stimulator.htm\">http:\/\/www.goulburnvlyflyfishing.com.au\/Information\/Fly%20Patterns\/fly%2013%20royal%20stimulator.htm<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Some kind of muddler (marabou or minnow) for the lake. Interesting, Bill looks here for \u201c<em>something that floats and puts out a good wake when retrieved whereas Peter has always argued that one should retrieve slowly if at all.  I suppose it all depends on what the fish think it is at the time<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most agreed with #14 or #16 for trout, but reminded Claude to consider some oversized dries to suspend nymphs and down to #18 for finicky eaters.<\/p>\n<p>Emergers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parachute Adams<\/li>\n<li>Aero Wing Emerger<\/li>\n<li>Possum Emerger<\/li>\n<li>Shaving brush<\/li>\n<li><em>Klinkhammer See <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goulburnvlyflyfishing.com.au\/Information\/Fly%20Patterns\/fly%208%20klinkhammer.htm\"><em>http:\/\/www.goulburnvlyflyfishing.com.au\/Information\/Fly%20Patterns\/fly%208%20klinkhammer.htm<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li>CDC emerger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nymphs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pheasant Tail Nymph \u2013 all pheasant, peacock hearl, flashback, bead heads (copper, black, gold, orange, weighted, unweighted)<\/li>\n<li>Black\/brown nymph \u2013 with and without Pheasant tail?<\/li>\n<li>Nathan\u2019s trout run nymph?<\/li>\n<li>Sexy waltz worm? \u2013 an interesting fly I found on an Orvis podcast (<a href=\"https:\/\/loren.teamfreestone.com\/tutorials\/nymphs\/sexy-walts-worm\">https:\/\/loren.teamfreestone.com\/tutorials\/nymphs\/sexy-walts-worm<\/a>) will give it a try locally<\/li>\n<li>Scruffy hares ear<\/li>\n<li>Midge Pupa Chironomid: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nac9l3h_eXk\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nac9l3h_eXk<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Frenchie<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to tie a variety using weighted\/unweighted, bead head or not (copper or tungsten)<\/p>\n<p>Wets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bibio &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/bush-bibio.html\">https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/bush-bibio.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Woolly bugger: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/flies\/the-complete-wooly-bugger-collection-boxed.html\">https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/flies\/the-complete-wooly-bugger-collection-boxed.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Glo bug (using a beetle pattern?)<\/li>\n<li>Pat Kennedy suggested Hotlips<\/li>\n<li>Shrek:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/the-shrek-collection.html\">https:\/\/www.troutflies.com.au\/the-shrek-collection.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Magoo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carp Flies: Evan provided some specific carp advice and added that \u201c<em>A lot of trout flies double as great patterns for Carp and Redfin, the following would be my ultimate Carp box in various weights, sizes and being creative with colours ie. nymphs don&#8217;t always need to be natural \ud83d\ude09<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Spork size 6-10<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Unnamed jig Fly of mine that looks like a carrot&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Buggers with and without hot spots, rubber legs, flash<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>trout nymphs with and without hot spots, rubber legs, flash<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>damsel nymph <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>parachute Adams size 10<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>glo bugs<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>I suspect Claude was anticipating only a few fly patterns to concentrate on, but this is what happens when you ask 4 or more people for fishing advice &#x1f600;  I really appreciate his sharing this journey with us, also to the other contributors for their knowledge.
