Many anglers are familiar with Vern Barby\u2019s excellent fly, the Magoo, which we first described way back in 2016\u00a0FlyStream #12 \u2013 The Magoo \u2013 FlyStream<\/a>. This pattern has caught thousands of trout since Vern created it in 1999.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Materials<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Hook \u2013 size 10-12 Wet fly<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Thread \u2013 Black 8\/0<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bead \u2013 3mm copper bead, coloured chartreuse.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tail \u2013 Black Marabou.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Body \u2013 Black\/emerald Sparkle Dubbing. (If you can\u2019t find this, substitute No 46 Spectra Dubbing and black rabbit fur, blended in equal proportions.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Collar \u2013 Black hen hackle.<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tying Instructions<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Place the bead on the hook.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tie in a clump of black Marabou for the tail. I break it off to a length of 3cm for a size 12 hook, and 4cm for the larger size 10 hook.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Dub the body.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tie in four turns of the black hen hackle immediately behind the bead.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Whip finish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Scruff up the body dubbing with some Velcro to give the fly a more mobile, lifelike appearance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If we have time we could visit the original Viva lure fly, as well have the colours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
