Fly Tying 23 Nov 2016 The Roy and The Humungous

Wednesday 23 November was tying the killer fly of 2016 with Nathan: the Roy and The Humungous. Never heard of them? Neither had Lyall until Nathan showed him the photos below!!! They sound like a very effective addition to any fly box, especially if you are fishing deep for trout in lakes or streams in our region.

Nathan advises that the following materials will tie both flies:

  • Marabou, Olive and Black
    Gold Metallic dubbing (longer stranded)
  • Grizzly Hackle
  • Krystal Flash
  • Gold Tungsten beads
  • Standard barbless wet fly hook #10 or #12

Useful Links Resource – Fly Tying on YouTube

There had been a suggestion that CAA establish its own YouTube video channel but the committee was uncertain that we would have sufficient material to make it worthwhile.  Meanwhile Ben has pointed me to this great fly tying channel.  Ben tells me that “Davie McPhail’s YouTube channel is one of the most extensive fly tying resources on the web. If you need a given fly there is a possibility it will be in here.”  I’ve added it to our Useful Links page.

Gurgler – Fly Tying 24 Aug 2016 (with some examples of flies tied on the night)

Evan volunteered to host another fantastic fly tying evening for Canberra Anglers’ Association.  This month we tied Gurgler flies.  The materials list and a few photos are available from the link at bottom.  You might need to get to Pratt’s Tackle Box in Belconnen or The Anglers Art in Philip.

Evan has advised that he has uploaded a post to provide extra advice on “how to tie in tail materials to avoid the dreaded tail wrap”. This is really useful stuff and I’ll add it as an individual post too.

A Surprise for Peter Buying a Jungle Cock Cape from UK

I attempted to order a  Jungle cock cape  from www.troutcatchers.com in England. I then received the following from troutcatchers:

Once again thank you for your order. Just to let you know when purchasing Jungle Cock outside the EU it is legally necessary to obtain a CITES certificate from DEFRA, which we can obtain on your behalf, fees for this service are £79.97

      More info www.troutcatchers.co.uk/cites-certificate-c2x17217724

Needless to say I have cancelled the order and will look to local resources as well as rethink my need for Jungle Cock eyes which I was hoping to use to dress Jindy Horrors which have been a successful fly for me when spotting for the large browns which patrol Lake Jindabyne shorelines after spawning runs have finished.

I have sent this just for the information of members who were wanting or thinking of ordering Jungle Cock Capes from overseas.
