I received an update on the Ozfish Unlimited AUSTRALIA FLY FISHING FESTIVAL.

A recent report by a CAA member of a trout kill at Pejar Dam were investigated by DPI. Oxygen levels and temps were seen to be OK at the time of inspection and no dead fish found. Regardless, it was good to see our members keeping an eye on our waters and reporting in when things go wrong.
This issue has a number of reports from related associations including severe problems during that recent heatwave at Gaden and actions being taken by the Council of Freshwater Anglers. Good to see JQ and Jaime again providing some interesting reading plus the report by Charlie and Lyall on our recent event at Lake Burley Griffin. Some news snippets discovered by Luke plus I report on experiments with waders in the pool.

The NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers annual Interclub Flyfishing Meet is being held at Black Gold Motel, Wallerawang on 3-5 May 2019 (weekend before Mothers’ Day).
CAA is an affiliate of NSWCFA and so is eligible to enter a team into this meet. It is a relaxed social get together but incorporates an inter club team competition with a mix of judged fishing, fly casting, fly tying and fish photography rounds. CAA have not attended in the past as it has clashed with other events but Stefan hopes to encourage members for this season. More info below:
Peter assumed the task of leading.
The Fly was the egg laying Elk Hair Caddis. It is a simple fly to tie and can be tied from size 20 to size 10. In past years it has been responsible for many hook ups for Peter (he cannot suggest that it was primarily the egg laying tie that attracted the fish or whether an ordinary would have done the job).
The following materials are required for the tying of the Egg Laying EHC:
Hook size: size 16 or your preferred size hook Hanak 100BL
Thread : Uni thread 8/0 Brown
Dubbing: Ice Dub UV peacock eye (or hends spectre dubbing 46)
Dubbing : superfine dubbing Tan
Hackle: Brown Saddle Hackle to suit hook size
Wing: Bleached Elk Hair

Leon has offered up this pattern. He said “I am sharing this easy to make fly for carp. For people who only have enough time to fish near home. Drag slow on bottom for carp and fast for Redfin.

This edition has commenced with a very thoughtful piece from our President (who later pointed me to a comprehensive article available here. In this vein, Leon spotted a significant fish kill in Pejar Dam. This has been reported to DPI through Steve Samuels. We await results from water testing that DPI are intending to carry out.
Only limited reporting on angling – has it been just too hot for people to get out and about? Meanwhile a couple of reports of fish stocking in the local area.

Minutes have been distributed by Steve.RFNSW meeting 11 outcomes – non-confidential version
