September 2024 Burley Line (Issue 204)

Paul Mc the cod whisperer strikes again at Bondi – what a magnificent fish albeit very much in the wrong spot (Easterly flowing catchment).  Paul also reports in about Black Lake.

All the news from the AGM with a ‘newish’ committee and trophy awards.  President’s speeches are here.

Stefan reports in from Western Australia – with some success shown.

Lachy’s session with the humongous was quite a success with a goodly number showing up and with 3 tying variations on the theme.

Don’t forget about the annual fly casting for the public – a flyer is included here for your use.

Mongolia – from Lyall

I was reminded of a brilliant trip to far northern Mongolia 16 kilometres from the Siberian border fly fishing with Fly Fishers International Certified Fly Casting Instructor Ganbaatar.  Ganbaa recently sent the fly fishing trip options for 2024 which I want to share.

Trips usually last a couple of weeks and transport and all meals are provided including caviar for breakfast some days, western food and local food others.  Don’t overlook the Horse Burgers!!!

Flights to Mongolia’s capital Ulaan Baatar are via Seoul or Beijing.  Look up the fishing locations at Khovsgol and Delgermurun on Google Earth.

Having been to Mongolia three time, I am qualified to say that if you want an adventure fly fishing holiday, this is for you

Post AGM web update

The AGM saw trophies awarded. Congratulations to recipients – photos in next Burley Line. Congratulations also to the new committee (familiar names and faces but with the addition of Paul Mc – welcome). Well done to the committee for their work in 2023/24.

Consequent to the AGM:

  • We have the 2024/25 program uploaded. More fly tying dates will be added in due course.
  • Everyone should be aware that club subscriptions are now due and that uou need to be financial to be covered by our insurance. All the details, and a form to update contact details, are here.
  • Our Natives Assessment Tool has been validated. There’s been no change needed.

Fly tying 28 Aug 2024 – Humongous

Lachy was lead and advised:

Hook – Long shank lure or streamer – I use TMC 5262 or a Gamakatsu SL45 Bone Fish in size 8-10
Bead – Silver 3.3 tungsten cyclops, or medium silver bead chain eyes
Thread – Black 8/0 / 70 Denier, 50 Denier Nano Silk/GSP also works very well
Tail – Black marabou
Tail flash – Silver Krystal flash or Flashabou
Body – Medium silver tinsel chenille
Rib – Small/Brassy silver wire
Hackle – light coloured or grizzly cock hackle. Hen cape feathers also work well. Slightly longer and softer fibres.

Looking forward to enjoying the tie and a wee dram.

August 2024 Burley Line (Issue 203)

This has become quite a fulsome edition.

Young Ryan has been very active – a substantial part of this issue! 😊 I also have to apologise to him, back in March he sent me a report on fishing during a Victorian trip.  This had fallen between the cracks multiple times – finally here, along with his recent trip to the south coast.

Lyall provides some information coming out of his contacts in Mongolia.  He’s got the inside knowledge post multiple trips he’s done there.

Greg S has been focussing on ‘giant’ things recently and shares them with us.

Lachy has been experimenting with various ties using a recently purchased pheasant.  He reports here on some success.  Images from recent CAA fly tying also.

A bit of science on trout.

JQ enticing us to head north.

Fly Casting is just around the corner and our flyer has been released.
