August 2026 Burley Line (Issue 225)

Some very sad news of the passing of Pat McFadden – he of some amazing fish both here, in Queensland and New Zealand.  Deepest sympathy to brother Paul and the entire family.

While our events are in hibernation mode, members have been getting about in warmer climes and having success.  A double dose of images from fly tying, for a change these were face to face care of the generosity of Nathan and Boss Outdoors.  Greg S has continued his trawling for interesting snippets on the web – keep it up mate.  I’ve been doing a bit of a deep dive into cold water pollution and DPIRD’s efforts to moderate the impact on natives.

Hope to see you all at the next meeting – Annual General Meeting, committee elections and trophy awards. Note, in the original newsletter the meeting start time was incorrect. Meeting starts at a special time of 6:00PM with an ordinary meeting to follow. Nibbles will be provided.

CAA’s Annual Fly Casting Lessons to the Public

The CAA will be holding its annual Fly Casting to the Public on successive Sundays 13, 20 and 27 September. Starts 10AM and finishes around midday.

This year we are moving location to Yarramundi Close at Weston Park (https://maps.app.goo.gl/c7rnHQb3tf2YiCXx9) for the first two weekends and then close by for the on-water session.

You only need to bring sunglasses (essential for eye protection – we don’t practice with real hooked flies, but we don’t want a fly line smacking you on the eye) and preferably a broad brimmed hat.

27 Sep we will casting into water https://maps.app.goo.gl/pCD2XyfQcd1cZhuQ7

July 2026 Burley Line (Issue 224)

It’s the quiet time for club events, but there’s still been plenty happening.  Great job by Xenii on the front cover, a Victorian trout fishing report, some cute crab flies tied, lots of images on our WhatsApp, a huge Googong cod spotted in the Canberra Times (included here courtesy of their Editor and it being spotted by the ever productive Greg S).

Apologies, those who accessed the newsletter earlier would have been misled by my poor expression. The June Fly Tying was led by that wizard Xenii. Nathan was good enough to provide the facility at Boss Outdoors.

Confessions (and tips) from a Dry Fly Snob

A number of members have noticed the preference of your hard working webmaster for fishing the dry fly. Frankly it is just because I’m getting a bit lazy. Here is a well known YouTube vlogger explaining the attractions and how best to go about it …. helps when you live in a country with lots of bugs and lots of fish – we should all be so lucky

April 2026 Burley Line (Issue 221)

No club event for March – cancelled as Claude was available to lead (and no-one volunteered to take it on?).  Instead we have some personal reports – an extensive one from some ‘usual suspects’, one from a regular contributor of other snippets and one from a keen junior member.

We have more from our WhatsApp channels – contact Claude to join up.

As always – some interesting links from Greg S as well as a report on his recent trip to the coast.  A fabulous report from Hector on his Canberra Day trip – since catching his first trout on fly at Jindabyne he’s really gotten into the swing of things.

Our web home page has references to the new individual membership for NSWCFA and MAS.
